A Good Year For Indie at SXSW 2017 Showcase
It’s that time of year again for Austin, Texas to host one of the largest film and music festivals the world has ever seen and boy did they. Beyond a conference for impressive and inspirational speakers, the South by Southwest event houses some of the greatest revolutionary talents, especially underground and underappreciated, in the world.
This year, indie names like Lizzo, Superglu, FRENSHIP, Lou Rebecca, Chastity Belt and more showcased their up-and-coming talents on different stages throughout the multiple venues. The curvaceous talent Lizzo brought her energy, spark and confidence to the SXSW stage and lit a flame in the heart of every attendee when she belted out her highly infectious ballad “Worship.” As she demanded the attention of the crowd with their “hands to the sky,” she brought the heat and lightning along with her nude playsuit- wearing backup dancers.
Although some disappointed at the showcase like the LA punk band Cherryy Glazer, the epic female foursome only known as Chastity Belt rebirthed something inside of us that we had not even realized had died. With a pure love of musical expression, emotions exuded onto both the Barracuda Backyard and Empire Garage stages and left a lasting impression that was difficult for others to live up to.
All-in-all, it was a good year for the showcase and for indie rock in general. Hopefully you got to enjoy some of the talent in Austin yourself, but there’s always next year! Right?
