Spotlight On: David Franz, founder of Underground Sun and Sol
David Franz- Producer/Songwriter/Engineer/Label President
A songwriter and producer first and foremost, David Franz started Underground Sun in 2001 with the vision of it being a future-thinking, artist-friendly record label. He prefers to call it an “artist development” company, because of his close involvement in the making of the sounds for the artists (from writing and recording, to mixing and mastering), as well as developing each artist’s online presence and brand.
Based in Los Angeles, David writes, produces, and engineers music for a wide range of artists in the Electronic, Pop, R&B, Hip-hop, Rock, and Americana genres. His music has been heard in prime time TV shows, multi-million dollar movies, advertisements for Fortune 500 companies, and through speakers around the world.
A graduate of Virginia Tech and Berklee College of Music, David’s passion for music and education has led him to become the Content Manager for Audio+Music for Lynda.com and LinkedIn, where he works with musicians and audio professionals to create world-class online training courses on digital audio workstations, music production, songwriting, music business, and many other audio and music-related topics. He’s the author of “Producing in the Home Studio with Pro Tools” as well as other books, articles, and online courses for Berklee Online and Lynda.com (now LinkedIn) about Pro Tools and music production.
David With Newly-Signed Artist Dammien Alexander
With all of the DIY tools available for artists these days, David wants to help new artists position themselves as global entertainers via the latest distribution, crowd-funding, marketing, publishing, and licensing/placement opportunities.
David’s own commitment to perfection and passion for music has been instrumental in the success of the label. The family-like feel of Underground Sun is due in large part to his persistent focus on the artists. We hope that people can hear this in the music!
