In October 2024 producer and bass player David Franz persuaded his fellow bandmates TD Lind, Karl Hunter and Sam Kulchin to meet up for a 3-day music writing adventure in the desert of Joshua Tree, California to see what inspiration they could conjure. Before playing their first note together, the band popped into The Copper Room, a landmark restaurant and lounge with a 1950s pilot theme, known for its martinis and rich music history. It was the perfect place for TD Lind and The Aviators to begin their new sonic voyage.
The sound that emerged was an exploration of the band’s collective musical roots… the ethereal longing of English psychedelia [I Will Wait], the stomping force of 60’s improvisational blues rock [Tell Me Did She], the yearning of Motown soul [I’m Sorry (Not Sorry)], and the protest spirit of American progressive soul [Trying Times]. We then took hours and hours of recorded jams home from the desert, carved them up into shortened, yet still expansive song arrangements, and then TD and David dug into writing the lyrics. “I Will Wait” speaks to family and friends lost to addiction, “Tell Me Did She” is a playful tale of female-empowered seduction, “I’m Sorry (Not Sorry)” encourages ownership of making apologies, and “Trying Times” protests divisive politics.
The Copper Room album embodies an ambitious band tapping into its core, elevating in its potential, and creating an audacious and soul-saturated musical tour de force.
